Dean May - Week 2 HW

Gregor de Cago – Wheelman of Sconsin
In the year 657, life is slowly returning in the form of the nations that rose from the ashes of Usmeric and Canus. Gregor de Cago, son of Isaac de Cago, son of Henri de Li’nois, has sworn his allegiance to Marion II, Queen of Sconsin, as a Wheelman in hopes of one day joining his grandfather in the annals of the Eighteeners. His first task, to act as an escort for the Eighteener hauling the Ambassador’s carriage on a run through the Wastes. As a Wheelman, Gregor has gone through the rigors of learning to drive hard and fast over the plains and tundra of the Canus region, but like most of his society he doesn’t really understand the internal workings of his vehicle, recognizing its functionality as more magic than science. Mechanical work is left to the Nuclear Cult, a religious order built on the holy texts of ancient auto-repair handbooks, who treat engineering as a ritualistic act requiring intense dedication, prayer, and the occasional sacrifice. Gregor’s most prized possession is his car, a crude amalgamation of parts from old-world muscle cars. Powered by a compact nuclear reactor (a design perfected in the old world), the car, dubbed Fourthhorse by its first Wheelman nearly a century ago, is a two seat coupe built for speed and maneuverability. In charge of navigation is Gregor’s closest companion, Odessa, a Siri-like AI built into the car as a driving assistant. As per instruction of the Nuclear Cult, Gregor was raised to see such computers as minor deities, and respect them as the spirit of the machine. Riding shotgun is Clark de Sprigfeld, an older Lancer sworn to protect his Wheelman and their vehicle. A hardened veteran, Clark must live down the shame of surviving his previous Wheelman. Clark and Gregor have not developed a strong relationship yet, and Clark fears that before long, Odessa will exact revenge for the loss of the last driver under his watch.
