Hannah Friedman - Week 2 HW

Aemon is a character I created for the first Dungeons and Dragons campaign I played. He’s an elven sorcerer, whose magic is primarily plant and nature based. His lineage is filled with mages, all of whom have created and passed down a tradition of plant based magic, and over time began to acquire similar characteristics to their magical subjects. As a result, Aemon does not need to sleep, but is instead energized by sunlight. He does not need to eat, using the sun to photosynthesize, but chooses to do so anyway because he enjoys the taste. One of his strange, hereditary-magic abilities includes the ability to communicate with plants. Because of this, when he eats he only consumes animal flesh, because he can hear plants scream when they are consumed. Observers would think that he’s a madman talking at plants, but he can hear their thoughts and feelings. He carries around a small thyme plant in a glass jar attached to his belt loop, and he has regular conversations with it and considers it to be his best friend. He grew up in the woods, secluded, with the rest of his small tribe. During his adolescence, he wandered to a village just outside the forest, where he encountered humans, dwarves, and city-elves. He befriends the town’s cleric, who noticed his magical potential, and invites him to live in the village. His family is upset by his decision to leave their forest and his intent to learn other forms of more dangerous magic, but he accepts the cleric’s offer anyway and lives in the village for several years, studying under the cleric to develop his magical abilities and be known as “that weird guy who talks to flowers.”. The kingdom the village belongs to eventually goes to war, and many of the villagers are recruited. Aemon is drafted, and it is quickly discovered that his ability to talk with plants would make him an effective spy. His methods include posing as a nomad and then snipping off parts of his thyme plant to replant in distant locations. The mother plant is kept with him at all times and informs him of events occurring around the “planted” plants.
